There are certain things that can put you at risk for developing a gluteal abscess.  First of all, if you are using drugs intravenously you may be at risk for getting an abscess.  You are also going to be at a great risk if you are an alcoholic.  Weight lifters and body builders also need to be aware of the risk for getting a gluteal abscess if they are using steroids.

You are going to notice some signs and symptoms if you are getting a gluteal abscess.  You may feel warm in that area.  You person may also feel some tenderness and swelling in that area as well.  You may even have a fever and notice that the area is actually getting red.  If you engage in the activities mentioned above and you are experiencing some of these symptoms you may want to get to a doctor and have the area checked out.  Keep in mind that different types of abscesses are going to cause different types of symptoms.  It is always best to know your body.  If you are not feeling well and you notice strange symptoms, you are going to want to be checked out by your doctor.

You may find that when you get to the doctor’s office, he or she is going to order some tests.  Then again, they may be able to look at the infected area and diagnosis a gluteal abscess without a test.  Your doctor may tell you that the area will heal on its own.  But, there are a lot of times that you are most likely going to be placed on an antibiotic in order to help fight the infection that has caused the abscess in the first place.  Your doctor may also want to take the time in order to cut the sore open and drain the pus from it.

If you have suffered from a gluteal abscess, you need to keep in mind that you are most likely going to be given restrictions related to using that muscle.  Your doctor may ask you to stop exercising that muscle for a while in order to give the area time to heal.  If you have been engaging in unhealthy behaviors that have put you at risk for the gluteal abscess, you are most likely going to need to stop those activities as well.  If you are not able to stop and you feel that you have a problem, you should talk to your doctor about this as well.

Most of the time, if you catch the abscess early and get medical treatment, you are going to find that your body will heal just fine.  However, if you notice the spot and you ignore it, you are only creating more complications in the long run.  It is best to talk to your doctor as soon as possible so that the infection does not spread and cause further complications.  It is always best to play it safe and have anything unusual checked out. You know your body better than anyone else.  Take the time to keep yourself healthy.
