In a society where fast food rules and convenience is king, it can seem almost impossible to some to stop their unhealthy eating habits. With both parents frequently working and the traditional nuclear family going by the wayside, many people no longer have the luxury of home cooked meals with all four food groups represented. In fact, a shocking number of meals for a lot of people are coming wrapped in paper bags or include instructions to slip into a heating sleeve and pop them in the microwave.

With rising health concerns, however, it seems that the world is finally catching on to the global health crisis that unhealthy eating habits can lead to. Whether you are looking to lose your love handles or completely overhaul your body, if you tend to avoid the outer perimeter of the grocery store and head straight for the frozen or processed foods, you’re likely going to have a hard time readjusting your eating. This article presents several ways to help you curb unhealthy eating habits in order to give you a longer and healthier life.

Trick Your Taste Buds

Everyone knows that they should be eating plenty of fruits and veggies but unfortunately many people find the idea of eating an asparagus spear to be revolting. One simple trick to get your daily dose of healthy foods is to make a smoothie in the morning and skip the sugary cereals you may be eating. If you don’t eat any breakfast at all, this is doubly important.

To make a healthy but delicious and expensive tasting breakfast smoothie, simply grab a banana and some strawberries and throw them in a blender. You should also try and stick one or two broccoli florets in the blender as well, and plenty of ice. A little apple juice can also go a long way towards enhancing the sweetness. If you are concerned about the broccoli, don’t be. The fruit completely masks the flavor, and you can enjoy knowing that you had a delicious breakfast with tons of nutrients that feels more like a $6 smoothie from a juice bar or specialty coffee shop.

Remove Temptation

If your pantry is full of processed snack cakes, crackers, marshmallow treats, and other unhealthy foods, then you will likely sneak a snack or two. This is not to say that everything you put in your mouth has to be whole grain and zero fat. People have a habit of gorging and grazing, however, and if your pantry is full of junk, then that’s what you’ll be grazing on.

Keeping snacks handy is a good thing, however. If you don’t relish the idea of munching on some baby carrots, buy a box of granola bars that are enhanced with fiber. Any low-fat, individually wrapped snacks will do—the wrapping makes you less likely to pig out.

Stay Away from Soda

Soda, be it regular or diet is bad for you no matter how you look at it. The occasional soft drink is one thing, but if you have a daily habit of drinking down a can or two, you are doing your body a disservice with your unhealthy eating habits. While water is definitely the best choice for beverage, many people get spoiled drinking flavored beverages. If that’s the case, you can invest in sugar free drink powders that can be added directly to bottled water, or even start drinking tea.

Simple Substitutions

Even by making simple substitutions in your every day food, you can make great strides to curbing your unhealthy eating habits and ultimately improving your overall health. If you like sugary cereal as a snack, consider switching to an un-sugared variety. If you like white bread, switch to whole wheat. Even exchanging your ice cream for sorbet (which comes in chocolate, not just fruit), you can enjoy a younger looking, younger feeling you.
