Progesterone Deficiency Symptoms and Causes

The hormone progesterone plays a large role in women’s cycles and pregnancy, and when its levels are low progesterone deficiency symptoms arise. Because of the importance of progesterone for women’s health and functioning, a doctor should be contacted if you feel you are presenting progesterone deficiency symptoms so that the problem can be dealt with quickly.

Why is Progesterone so Important?

Progesterone has a hand in many of the female cycles and processes, including menstruation and pregnancy. It is produced inside of the ovaries and is responsible for certain changes that take place in the woman’s uterus during the later parts of her menstrual cycle. Essentially, the hormone helps to prepare the uterus for implantation of a fertilized egg. Once pregnant, progesterone also maintains the functions and health of the uterus. It is because of this, that progesterone deficiency symptoms must be taken seriously.


Symptoms of low progesterone may vary more than you would think, and affect younger women as well as women starting menopause. In younger women, these manifested symptoms are referred to as PMS, but it should be noted that the term PMS is thrown around far too easily and cavalierly.

Depression is a common symptom of low progesterone, and although it can be mild for some people, the reverse is also true. Depression spouting from a deficiency in progesterone may be so severe that the woman begins having suicidal thoughts and tendencies.

Insomnia and fatigue are also common symptoms, and so it is important to keep an eye out for any uncharacteristic changes regarding your energy levels and sleep patterns. If you normally sleep through the night and are suddenly finding yourself waking up several times, or unable to fall asleep at all, it could very well warrant speaking to a physician. If your energy levels are suddenly dropping into the red, you should be wary as well. Be sure to look for any changes in your activities or diet that may be resulting in these problems.

Heavy menstruating and excessive clotting during periods is another sign of low progesterone. Bleeding during menstruation can be so severe that feminine hygiene products must be changed up to once or twice an hour at times. Clots are generally visible as well, and may range in size. Because of this excessive bleeding and clotting, abdominal pain may be more severe for the woman than it normally would be.

Irregular periods are also a common symptom of progesterone deficiency. Women may experience changes in blood flow, and may actually have fewer or more periods than normal. While many women will experience a period every 20 days, some women have been known to go without having a period for several months, only to finally have one that lasts more than 30 days straight.

Unfortunately, many side effects can negatively impact sexual health as well. Loss of libido is quite common, as is vaginal dryness in older women. This can cause sex to be uncomfortable and even painful. In addition to these, women may also experience severe urinary tract infections, cysts, fibroids, and changes in appetite.


There are several reasons why a woman may be progesterone deficient. Stress is one of the most common causes and can affect ovulation as well as actual progesterone levels. Along with stress is the common cause, birth control pills. Birth control pills contain high levels of hormones, particularly estrogen which can lead to a hormonal imbalance.

Even eating a lot of meat can cause you to have problems with your progesterone levels. Animals nowadays are literally packed with estrogen to help them grow bigger. When women eat large amounts of meat, this estrogen passes on to them and can cause hormonal imbalances.
