Are There Any Side Effects Of Maltitol?
There are side effects of maltitol, though they seem to vary from person to person, but usually involve an accumulation of gas in the digestive tract. Maltitol is an artificial sweetener coming into increasingly widespread usage.
Artificial sweeteners are looked upon as a good thing, as sugar, or at least excessive amounts of sugar, is not healthy, and can lead to obesity as well as medical problems. However, artificial sweeteners can sometimes bring with them their own problems, and are not always a good substitute sweetener for everyone. Some would no doubt be better off avoiding sweeteners altogether, artificial or otherwise.
Categories Of Sweeteners - Artificial sweeteners can be categorized as being either noncaloric, or sugar alcohols which do contain calories. Saccharine is no doubt the best known of the noncaloric sweeteners, and is found in a wide range of drinks and snack foods, as well as the artificial sweetener most often used instead of sugar in a cup of coffee. Artificial sweeteners do not cause many of the problems sugar causes. For one thing, they are easier on the teeth. It cannot be said that their use will absolutely prevent tooth decay, but certainly get us pointed in the right direction. Artificial sweeteners can also be used to advantage by those attempting to lose weight, but still crave a certain amount of sweets in their diets.
Sugar alcohol sweeteners do contain calories, and while healthier to digest than sugar, are not of much help when it comes to attempting to lose weight. Maltitol is one of the better known sugar alcohol sweeteners. Sorbitol is another.
Artificial sweeteners can bring on their own side effects and the side effects of maltitol appear to be quite severe according to some who have experienced them. Even though the FDA has approved the sweetener as being safe, it can still be a source of discomfort. In spite of the FDA's approval, the potential long term side effects of maltitol remain somewhat of an unknown. In this regard, it's probably safe to say, that one should not rely on artificial sweeteners as a regular part of the diet, no more than one should rely heavily in sugar to sweeten their food. Artificial sweeteners also have a tendency to encourage people to ear more sweetened foods, thinking it is now safer to do so, and put on weight in the process, either by using noncalorie sweeteners and simply eating more, or using sugar alcohol sweeteners, which will add calories to the food.
Moderation Seems To Be The Key - For most of us, using an artificial sweetener such as maltitol seldom creates a problem, simply because we don't take in too much of it in any one sitting. While there are exceptions, most feel uncomfortable stuffing themselves with sweets, even with the knowledge that no sugar is present. We eat a little of one thing, and then go on to something else. There are a few horror stories though, indicating that some have a more severe reaction to maltitol than others. It's not quite the same as an allergic reaction, and is not an allergic reaction, but if a little too much maltitol is ingested, there are those who really suffer from gas and upset stomachs to the point of becoming ill.
Most of us can eat a power bar sweetened with maltitol for lunch without feeling any unpleasant side effects, or any side effects at all. For others, the side effects of maltitol experienced from eating just a single power bar or drinking a glass of sweetened juice, can often be too much to bear. If one is diabetic or overweight, and can't ingest maltitol without having problems, saccharine may be the obvious solution.
