What is nearsightedness?
A condition of vision that results in objects nearby to be easily seen while objects further away are blurry is called nearsightedness. It is a very common condition that can affect the young as well as the old. Also called myopia, it is a condition in which the eyeball is longer than normal or if the cornea possesses too much of a curve. When light enters the eye, it cannot focus properly, causing faraway objects to be blurred.
How it occurs

Treatment for Myopia
Most people are prescribed eyeglasses or contacts to correct the condition of nearsightedness, which works well while the devices are in place. Once removed, however, the individual will still experience blurry vision at a distance because the physiology of the eyeball itself has not changed. A treatment that is growing in popularity is lasik surgery; a procedure that adjusts the cornea in order to provide better light focus into the eye and on to the retina so that vision is much clearer than before the surgery. This treatment has become so popular because it is a long term rather than a short term solution to both nearsightedness and farsightedness, resulting in the possibility of eliminating eyeglasses and contacts.
Though it has yet to be proven, a number of researches believe that the progression of nearsightedness is able to be slowed through exercising the eyes.
Eye Exercises for Myopia
Since the ways in which the eyes are used are known to worsen the condition of myopia, it is believed by many that doing exercises that involve the eyes can halt further deterioration and actually improve nearsightedness in some individuals. It is recommended that nearsighted individuals practice the following steps:
- Rest and relax the eyes in a quiet, dark room; focusing on deep breathing techniques
- Practice relaxation techniques for the neck, head and shoulders
- Alternate your visual focus between a single item placed only a few inches from your nose and a distant object approximately 20 feet away; spending about 5 counts on each.
- Massage the closed eyes to relieve strain.
As mentioned, there is no definitive proof that exercising the eyes can reduce or prevent nearsightedness for developing in individuals. It will, however, relieve eye strain which can certainly improve visual abilities.
A growing number of the population now spend the greater part of the day in front of computers, which means that more and more people suffer from nearsightedness. People who spend long hours reading or doing other close work such as intricate assembly will also find their vision can become impaired. It is known that these individuals must take regular breaks from their work to rest and relax the eyes to avoid further discomfort.
Although there is no proof that eye exercises for myopia help to avoid nearsightedness, they will certainly help to alleviate eye strain that can lead to the further deterioration of the eye’s performance.
